He has had a lot of anger in his life, and we have used LEGO to talk about injustices that we both have been through. Everything from violence, social injustice, racism, politics and religion have been examined, all while holding those tiny pieces of plastic. And when hardship and loss comes again into our world, it is LEGO that we turn to for comfort.

Or maybe tap into a parent or guardian who owes you big time. The first thing you’ll notice about this set is the size of it. It’s packaged in a large, tab-sealed box that towers over other seasonal offerings like this year’s Winter Village offering, Santa’s Visit. It has standard “adult theming” for the design – with a black background, large logos in the corners, and a strip along the bottom with set information.
Make the holidays even more fun with new LEGO® Ideas Home Alone
I loved LEGO as a child and only recently came back to it. My husband, who is trans, and I use it to calm our anxiety and to bond. We have long discussions into the night while building sets and bricks.
LEGO Ideas 21330 Home Alone House: The largest Ideas set ever is packed with movie references [Review]
Determined to find more people like me, I started wearing rainbow flags on my brick badge. Most would ignore it, but at an AFOL convention in 2015, I met a guy named Erez who remarked on my rainbow badge, and then introduced me to his AFOL boyfriend. I told them how excited I was to meet them, and how I didn’t know there were any other gay AFOLs like me around. I joked that there should be a way for us to find each other… and wouldn’t it be cute if we called each other “gayFOLs”? It was that day, while standing in line, that I got on my phone and created the “GayFOLs” Facebook page thinking it would be a great way to meet others like me.

Memorable characters
I have seen AFOL groups on social media bring out hate in people. I don’t feel welcome or safe in these spaces even if it’s only online. One of the other defining experiences I had in the LEGO community occured this past September.

If you’ve already reached that limit through previous orders your entire order may be cancelled. About six years ago, a participant at a local BrickCon made a gay club. It included quite a bit of lighting and depicted gay male minifigs enjoying the evening. Since then, I’ve made MOCs for Pride, shown only to my friends list. GayFols is the first forum where I have made my Pride and LGBTQ+ MOCs public. Coming out of the closet as a gay LEGO fan changed the course of my life, and it is even more beautiful and colorful than I could have ever imagined.

I didn’t think this would become something important, or necessary. I didn’t realize that others wanted the same things I did. And a collection of people stepped up and made us into something good. This isn’t the 80s anymore, and not every LEGO face has a smile, but we can still build our own worlds to keep us safe. I was excited for this one, but for me it's a bit of a letdown. The outside isn't that great, I will even say boring to look at. The inside feel like "Lego Friends" style home on steroids and a bit too dense and cluttered.
The fact they are played by many people at xmas and are on rotation on television and promoted on streaming services probably confirm this, but mainly, both movies are set at xmas. Don't really care about the movie but if the house had been made in dark red, I would be all over it. So, thankfully I can relax and wait for the next modular instead. The set looks great overall, but I just cant get over how terrible that van is. I cant help but think that was an afterthought - seems there was no attempt what so ever to mimic the real thing.

The age range, like all “adult” sets, is set at “18+”, but the building complexity would probably be fine for a much younger individual. The set’s contents are showcased well, but interestingly LEGO decided to go with a “movie timeline” approach to showing the minifigures. The front of the box has four of the five characters , all arranged as they might have been seen earlier in the film.
I have been into Lego for almost a decade now, and it started back when I was studying in university in NZ. I mostly collected the modular building sets, and made little storytelling vignettes for each set. One of these was a little wedding scene featuring a policeman and a fireman, which I really liked.
While I've been saying "no" to lots of sets it turns out I'm saying "yes" to just as many as always. Feeling like you're not buying as much but it's just Lego releasing more stuff and you're still spending the same amount (it maybe more). Compromises become obvious when viewing the treehouse from behind, where detail seems noticeably lacking. However, the front is definitely more important for display and the structure feels absolutely rigid because an attached 2x8 plate strengthens the trunk. The ladder situated underneath the treehouse provides no additional support, but folds perfectly into position.
It was a really positive atmosphere and everyone was really friendly. We have also used them to help our daughter, who came out to us last year, to deal with her feelings and emotions toward girls. There was a story online about the Bookshop being owned by two lesbians and for awhile she focused on how that could be her one day, and how happy those women were together. So many of the members interact with the group that there is always new content to see.
As noted earlier, the extra rooms aren’t really movie-accurate in positioning, but they don’t feel out of place. Having them as a removable sub-building also means you can display your set in a shallower area, if you store this bit somewhere else. If you’ve been keeping a running total of all the key locations and events from the Home Alone film, you’ve probably noticed a couple of key spots missing from the house. The locations are present – but pulled out into their own sub-building. There are some necessary liberties taken with the house’s layout – the steps down to the basement are gone, with the door now being at “ground level”. It’s printed on a foil sticker, but none of the silver shows through.
Upon reaching the treehouse, Kevin severs the zip-line. Scissors are accordingly found inside the structure, while a pirate flag hangs outside. That takes direct inspiration from the onscreen location and I am impressed that such detail is included, especially since the flag is only briefly shown during the original film. The toy plane looks fantastic as well, cleverly integrating paddle elements.
To really illustrate how large the McCallister House is, here’s the set sandwiched in between the Modular Police Station and Santa’s Visit. Last but certainly not least we have Marv Murchins and Harry Lime minifigures. Self-styled as the Wet Bandits, these two bumbling thieves are the true stars of the Home Alone franchise, and provide the comic-relief as their hair-brained scheme to rob the McCallister House comes undone. The lack of a friendlier face is also disappointing, as you learn that he’s actually a kind old man with a sad story towards the end of the movie.
A thriving online community on Facebook, GayFOLs is currently home to over 850 members form all over the world. I asked its founder, Bruce H., to tell us a bit about his experience and how and why GayFOLs came to be. I also reached out to members to hear what their experiences have been like in the hobby. Where the set truly shines is its immaculately detailed interiors, and play features baked in, which are allowed to shine with its dollhouse design. One of the highlights of the set is that it’s the first set to introduce these masonry bricks in brown – there are 143 in total scattered across the walls of the McCallister House. In many ways, it sets the stage the build, making you feel like you’re about to commence building all the booby traps, and getting the house ready for the Wet Bandits.
